Balanced attack leads Bears past Wildcats

Sophomore setter maggie mcnamara found her teammates, setting five different players with at least 11 kills as #4 concordia-st. Paul (14-1, 5-0 nsic) defeated wayne state college (9-6, 2-2 nsic) 30-27, 32-30, 25-30, 30-22 on friday evening at the gangelhoff center.

mcnamara recorded 70 assists in the match, her season-high just one more than in concordia's 3-1 win over western new mexico on august 31. She set the golden bears to a .207 hitting pct. In 188 attacks, including a .310 hitting performance in the fourth game (20k, 7e, 42ta). She also posted her third double-double of the season with 15 digs.

emily palkert and maria steinhagen led the bears with 18 kills apiece in the match and each had five total blocks, palkert with one solo. Steinhagen started hot with six kills in seven attempts without an error in the first game. She finished with a .361 hitting pct. In 36 attempts with five errors. Palkert closed out the match hitting .306, committing seven errors in 36 attacks.

kate bennett and whitney meierotto each had 14 kills while sadie kessler added 11.

the digs on defense were spread out just as evenly as the kills were on offense with meierotto leading the way with 21 digs. Four players reached double-figures as mary slinger matched mcnamara's 15 while krista erickson had 13. rachel knutson just missed double-figures with nine digs.

the golden bears and wildcats each recorded ten team blocks in the match.

wayne state was led by emily schroeder's 20 kills, 11 digs and six blocks (two solo) while laura dolezal had a match-high 26 digs. However, only three wildcats reached double-digit kills as wayne state recorded just 57 team kills to concordia's 75.

the victory for the golden bears is their 69th consecutive win against a conference opponent, the third longest streak in ncaa division ii history.

the streak will be put to the test tomorrow evening when the sixth-ranked team in the nation, southwest minnesota state, comes to the gangelhoff center for a 6 p.m. Match in a battle of two unbeaten nsic teams.
