The reigning two-time NSICÂ player of the week continued his assault on opposing pitching staffs this afternoon in Duluth, Minn.
Matt Borman went 6-10 with two home runs, eight rbi and a steal to lead Concordia University (26-10) to a sweep at Minnesota Duluth (15-32) as the Bears took game one 9-6 before a 12-4 win in the second game.
Borman, who was the NSICÂ pitcher of the week two weeks ago before earning NSICÂ player of the week honors last week, went 3-5 in each game.
In the first game, he had a pair of doubles and his tenth stolen base with a run and an rbi. That was before he lit up the Bulldogs in the second game. Borman, who hit a pair of three run home runs in the same inning last Sunday at Northern State, struck again with a grand slam to the opposite field gap in the fourth before pulling a three run shot to right in the seventh inning. In the second game, he ended up with two runs, seven rbi and also reached on an error.
The Bears didn't control the lead for the entire first game despite Borman doubling in his first two at bats. The Bears stranded runners on second and third in the first and UMD scored two in the bottom of the inning on David Olson's two run home run to take an early 2-0 lead.
But
Jake Waldman found the perfect spot for his eighth homer of the season, hitting a three run blast to center following a Borman rbi double to put CU on top 4-2.
Jake Schmidt pulled a repeat of Waldman's home run, hitting one to center himself in the third inning to put the Bears ahead by three.
UMD answered, tying the score at five with a three run home run Tim Garceau.
But an rbi double by
Andy Judkins and a two run double by Schmidt in the fourth inning put Concordia back on top by three. Duluth would add a run in the bottom of the inning but would get no closer as
Derek Mason added Concordia's third home run in the fifth inning. The solo shot by mason was his second of the season.
Borman started on the mound for the Bears and pitched the first two innings. He faced just nine batters, striking out a pair. The only damage done was the two run homer he allowed in the first.
Blake Devries relieved Borman and registered a strikeout for the only batter he retired. He allowed two runs (one earned) as he walked one.
Eric Utoft was the third pitcher for the Bears and earned his fourth win of the year (4-2). He worked 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Aaron Pfalzgraff pitched two no-hit innings, striking out a pair to earn his second save of the season to close out umd.
Schmidt and Waldman each knocked in three for the Bears. Schmidt's home run was his second of the season as he went 2-4.
In the second game, the Bears fell behind 2-0 early once again as the Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the first and manufactured another run in the second.
After hitting into double plays in the first and second innings and leaving runners on second and third in the third inning, the Concordia offense finally received the jolt it needed as
Brenden Furrow hit a leadoff home run to right centerfield in the fourth.
That home run set off the first of two six run innings for Concordia.
Tony Boxwell and
Mason Reinhart followed with singles and were sacrificed to second and third by
John Maciej's bunt. Boxwell scored on a wild pitch with Reinhart moving up to third.
Mason was walked intentionally and
Greg Winegarden drew a walk to load the bases for Borman.
Borman's blast, his ninth of the season, gave the Bears a 6-2 lead.
UMD got two back in the sixth inning but another six run inning for the Bears followed in the top of the seventh.
Maciej had an rbi single, Mason had a two run single and Borman hit his tenth home run of the season, a three run shot to right that gave the Bears a 12-4 lead.
Bryan Bach started for Concordia, pitching three strong innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout. He did not issue a walk or factor into the decision.
Ted Farni relieved Bach and earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-0. He worked 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit while walking two with two strikeouts. The Bulldogs were able to score twice on Farni.
Kirk Ingram relieved Farni in the sixth, working out of his jam to earn his second save. He worked 1.2 hitless innings, striking out three of his four outs with two walks.
Boxwell joined Borman with a three-hit effort, going 3-4 with two runs at the plate. Furrow's home run was his second of the season.
The Bears, who have won eight consecutive games, will carry that streak into a road series at Upper Iowa in Fayette this Saturday and Sunday with a four game series to close out their NSIC season.
The series is especially crucial with the Bears sitting in fifth place in the standings, just percentage points behind Upper Iowa. Concordia needs to take three of four from the Peacocks to control their own destiny to earn a spot in the four team NSIC tournament.
With SMSU hosting Winona State, if things fall right, the Bears could move up even higher in the standings.
