Concordia University (30-13) dropped a 10-7 decision at Wayne State (37-13) despite six Wildcat errors. The loss ended the Golden Bears run in the NSIC tournament on Friday evening in Wayne, Neb.
Concordia struck first in the top of the first when
Jake Waldman scored when
Brenden Furrow reached on an error.
But the Wildcats put up a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, manufacturing a run to tie the score.
The Bears reclaimed the lead in the second.
Derek Mason hit a two out single to center and came around to score on the next play when
Greg Winegarden singled. Mason scored on a throwing error but Winegarden was thrown out on the play trying to advance to second.
Wayne State again tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third. Dustin Jones had a one out single and stole second and third bases. He scored on a Scott Bidroski single.
As the teams kept jostling for position, the Bears once again took the upper hand with a leadoff home run by Furrow. But they stranded
Mason Reinhart on third, holding their 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wayne State took over, finally getting to starter
Aaron Pfalzgraff. The Wildcats put up four runs, three of them coming with two outs to Chase Pfalzgraff from the game trailing 6-3.
His final line was 3.2 innings allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks. He took his first loss of the year, falling to 3-1.
Wayne added a run each in the fifth and sixth innings off of
Bryan Bach to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Bach went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Concordia, trailing by five, batted around in the seventh, scoring four runs to cut the score to one. All four runs were unearned in the inning as Wayne State committed three errors.
But Concordia was unable to mount a rally in the final two innings as Wayne State put up two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Winegarden lifted his batting average to .433 with a 3-4 performance while Waldman, Reinhart and
Tony Boxwell all had two hit games with an rbi.
The Bears now turn their attention to the NCAAÂ Central Region rankings. They held the seventh ranking in the latest poll with the top six earning bids to the NCAA Central Region Tournament. Concordia's 30-13 overall record establishes a new school record for victories, breaking the 2005 and 2006 mark of 29.
