Bears leave 16 runners on base in two tight losses

Concordia university (23-23, 9-5 nsic) dropped two tight contests to wayne state college (26-18, 9-7 nsic) on tuesday at dunning field in st. Paul, minn. The golden bears out-hit the wildcats in each game, but stranded 16 runners, seven in game one in a 1-0 loss and nine in an eight inning 4-2 loss.

in the first game, mandy turba carried a one-hit gem into the seventh inning before wayne state finally manufactured a run with a lead-off single by breann parks before she was moved up on a sacrifice bunt by their second-leader in slugging percentage, cassandra ward.

parks scored on a single to center by sara salmen on the next play to put wsc ahead by one.

after the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the seventh, nicole tischler reached safely on an infield single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded in scoring position with two outs to end the game.

concordia had their chances, stranding a runner on third in the first, bases loaded in the second and runners on first and second in the sixth.

turba finished the game going seven strong innings, allowing three hits and one run while walking three and striking out six. She falls to 12-14 on the season.

the second game started the same as the first for the golden bears, stranding a runner on third base to end the inning as anna bjorlin singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bjorlin finished 3-4 in the second game and stole her eighth base of the season.

but things started coming together in the second for cu after tiffani rodd drew a one out walk. She advanced to third base when natalie mast drilled a single down the left field line and came in to score on tischler's rbi single up the middle.

mast and tischler each swiped second base on consecutive at bats, giving the bears runners on second and third with two outs, but once again concordia left runners in scoring position, minimizing the damage against wayne state.

the wildcats got a run back in the third and the score remained knotted after the teams played a scoreless fourth.

concordia regained the lead in the fifth as bjorlin once again led off with a single, moved up on josey olson's sacrifice bunt and scored when amanda yurek connected, lacing a double off the center field fence, just missing her first home run of the season.

the wildcats matched concordia's run in the top of the sixth, however with a pair of solid hits that brought in the run.

wayne state would score two unearned runs in the eighth inning to take their first lead of the second game and the bears were unable to capitalize on a rally in the bottom half of the inning, leaving runners on first and second with one out after a pair of sharp grounders to third.

jenny kaminski was saddled with the loss, pitching a complete game with eight innings, four runs (two earned) on nine hits. She struck out four without issuing any walks and fell to 11-9.

concordia returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to take on upper iowa at 2:00 in northern sun action.
