The golden bears (18-17) completed their 2007 concordia tournament by snapping a six game losing streak, defeating minnesota duluth 11-3 in the first game before a 4-1 loss to st. Cloud state (19-19) in the second game on sunday afternoon at dunning softball complex in st. Paul, minn.
in the first game, the bears pounced all over minnesota duluth as the offense woke up with force. They scored five in the first, one in the second and finished strong with five more in the seventh inning.
all nine batters came up in the first inning that started with a one out triple to right center by
natalie mast. She scored on
amanda yurek's rbi single to left center. Yurek would score on the next play when
abby brundidge ripped an rbi double to left center as cu punished the gaps early on.
mallory olson stepped up with brundidge on second and knocked her in on a single up the middle and scored on the next play when
tiffani rodd stroked an rbi double to left center giving concordia five consecutive hits - three for extra bases and four in a row that scored a run.
in the second brundidge produced a sacrifice fly to counter umd's two runs in the bottom of the first.
the bulldogs got another run back in the second, cutting the score to 6-3.
but
mandy turba shut down minnesota duluth the rest of the way, finishing the game strong going the distance to allow three runs on 10 hits without issuing any walks and striking out five. With the win, turba moves to 8-11.
in the seventh inning,
anna bjorlin had an rbi single and she was followed by mast and yurek who each delivered two-run singles to give the bears the eight run victory.
errors cost concordia again in the second game as all four of st. Cloud state's runs were unearned. They scored one in the first and three in the second inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead over the bears.
the bears offense didn't pick up where it left off against umd, stranding runners on first and second base in the second, fourth and sixth innings. They stranded seven runners on base for the game.
cu did put together a late seventh inning rally as
josey olson scored from second base when bjorlin reached on an error by the shortstop. J.olson went 2-3 in the second game.
jenny kaminski took a tough loss for the bears, pitching a complete game with six innings allowing four runs - all unearned as cu's defense made three more errors behind her. She surrendured just six hits and two walks to the huskies while striking out three. She falls to 10-6 on the season.
the 2007 concordia tournament was won by the university of nebraska at omaha who finished with a 4-1 record and won the tie-breaker with st. Cloud state by virtue of greater run differential.
concordia returns to action on tuesday afternoon when they travel to take on minnesota duluth at 2:00 before a road matchup at minnesota state on wednesday at 3:00 in mankato, minn.
