Concordia university (16-4, 10-2 nsic) continued to roll through the northern sun with a 75-68 win over bemidji state (3-18, 3-9 nsic) on saturday evening at the gangelhoff center. The bears were led by freshman
craig heiman's (left) 20 points and seven rebounds off the bench while senior
kyle marxhausen added 18 points. The duo each drained a pair of three-pointers as well.
heiman finished the game 8-14 from the field and 2-4 from three-point territory in 19 minutes while marxhausen (right) ended up 7-14 from the floor and 2-5 from long range.
concordia never trailed in the ballgame but bemidji state did force five ties, the last one coming at 4:38 in the first half at 23-23 until senior
joey peel's layup but the bears ahead for good. Peel finished with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
concordia's largest lead in the game was 18, 64-46 with 6:58 remaining in the game. Bemidji state did fight back, cutting the gap as close as six, 74-68 but with just nine seconds to play in regulation.
freshman guard
mike cunningham added a career-high seven assists off the bench in 17 minutes of action. Senior center
drew shepp contributed nine points on 3-4 shooting and had a pair of blocks.
concordia shot 50.0% (27-54) for the game, converting at the same percentage in both halves while also shooting 33.3% (5-15) from three for the contest, again hitting that mark in each half. The bears shot a perfect 9-9 at the free throw line in the first half but dropped off in the second half to finish at 61.5% (16-26).
with the win, the golden bears sit in third place, a half game behind sw minnesota state in the standings. Concordia returns to action on tuesday, feb. 6 when they host north central university at 7:00 at the gangelhoff center.
