kyle marxhausen helped the bears avoid overtime when he hit a jump shot with three seconds left to give concordia (18-5, 11-3 nsic) at 72-70 win on the road over the university of mary (8-16, 4-11 nsic) at mcdowell activity center in bismarck, nd.
marxhausen finished with a game-high 23 points on 6-12 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc and 8-11 from the free throw line. He also had a block and an assist in 34 minutes.
the bears jumped out to a quick 16-2 lead just four minutes into the game, but the marauders fought their way back to take a 40-39 halftime lead. They would extend the lead to as many as five, twice in the second half, with the last at 52-47 with 14:22 to play in the game.
over the last 14 minutes neither team led by more than four points and there would be six ties, including at :09 when mary's bill shelton was fouled on a layup to cut the bears lead 70-69. He converted the free throw to tie the game at 70, leading to marxhausen's heroics.
