Marxhausen hits game-winner with three seconds on board

Senior kyle marxhausen helped the bears avoid overtime when he hit a jump shot with three seconds left to give concordia (18-5, 11-3 nsic) at 72-70 win on the road over the university of mary (8-16, 4-11 nsic) at mcdowell activity center in bismarck, nd.

marxhausen finished with a game-high 23 points on 6-12 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc and 8-11 from the free throw line. He also had a block and an assist in 34 minutes.

the bears jumped out to a quick 16-2 lead just four minutes into the game, but the marauders fought their way back to take a 40-39 halftime lead. They would extend the lead to as many as five, twice in the second half, with the last at 52-47 with 14:22 to play in the game.

over the last 14 minutes neither team led by more than four points and there would be six ties, including at :09 when mary's bill shelton was fouled on a layup to cut the bears lead 70-69. He converted the free throw to tie the game at 70, leading to marxhausen's heroics.

junior guard jason birr turned in the bears first double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing ten rebounds. He was a perfect 5-5 from the floor, with 1-1 from three point range.

freshman craig heiman scored 11 and had a team-high four assists in 25 minutes as the only other bear in double-figures.

the bears dominated on the boards, pulling down 46 compared to 25 for the marauders. Concordia was able to outscore mary 19-8 in second-chance points.

for the game, the bears shot 25-50 (.500) from the floor. The bears shot better from beyond the arc, going 5-9 (.556), than from the free throw line, making only 17-32 (.531).

mary took more shots than concordia, making 27-62 (.435), making 9-20 (.450) from three point range and 7-10 (.700) from the charity stripe. They were led by lance doppler with 17 points, while zach dosch had 14 and jordan engelhardt added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
