Golden bears hold-on in denver despite lowest scoring outing

#8 concordia university (11-0) remained undefeated despite their lowest scoring game of the season, defeating metro state (5-6) 64-55 on friday evening in the metro state christmas classic in denver, colo.

concordia's previous season low was 76 in a 76-64 win over minnesota state on dec. 18. It was their second game decided by under ten points and their second-closest game of the season, behind the 83-77 six point win over bemidji state on dec. 8.

the golden bears were powered by 14 second half points by senior center amanda behnke (eagan, minn.), who scored a game-high 19 points on 7-12 shooting. She was 6-9 in the second half from the floor.

kelly lund's (sr., g, new brighton, minn.) three-pointer 14 seconds into the game on cu's first possession gave concordia the first lead of the contest.

but the roadrunner's would go on to open up a 15-10 lead in the first eight minutes until the golden bears stormed off a 10-0 run in the next four-plus minutes of action to take a 20-15 lead after sputtering with just seven points in the seven minutes following lund's game-opening three-pointer.

metro state never led again in the contest.

a three-pointer by sophomore forward abby nielsen (maplewood, minn.) gave concordia their largest lead of the first half, 29-22 with 2:33 to play until the break before the golden bears carried a 30-26 lead into halftime.

the roadrunners did not go quietly, however, tying the score at 38 off stephanie sauter's three-pointer.

but the next five points went back to concordia as a pair of lay-ups by behnke sandwiched a free throw by katie laviolette (sr., g, manitowoc, wis.).

the game remained close, but cu used solid defense down the stretch to hold off metro state.

concordia's largest lead of the game ended up being the final score, when a pair of candace olstad (jr., f, elgin, minn.) free throws in the closing seconds made the final margin nine points.

c.olstad finished with 13 points and seven rebounds and was 5-7 from the floor.

c.olstad and behnke were the only golden bears to reach double-figures.

lund and sophomore guard jamie jones (mounds view, minn.) each had eight points.

laviolette finished with five points on 5-6 free throw shooting while dishing out seven assists and grabbing five rebounds. Senior guard mary schroeder matched c.olstad's team-high seven rebounds and scored four points.

concordia shot 41.8% (23-55) while holding metro state to 35.1% (20-57) shooting. The golden bears committed only 11 turnovers and outscored the roadrunners 22-10 in the paint.

concordia continues to defend their undefeated start tomorrow afternoon when they take on the university of colorado-colorado springs at 2 p.m.
