Bears survive with win over msu moorhead 67-65 in nsic opener

The concordia men's team improved to 5-1 (1-0 nsic) with a 67-65 win over msu moorhead in their nsic home opener when dragon guard blake strouth's last second three point attempt hit off the back of the rim giving the golden bears the win.

sophomore craig heiman (marshall, wi - left) hit a fadeaway jump shot in the middle of the lane to give the bears a 66-64 lead with 00:49 seconds to play and after a free throw by the dragons, senior chuol chany (des moines, ia) hit one of two free throws with 00:08 left to give the golden bears the 67-65 margin of victory.

the two teams traded baskets through the first eight minutes, then the golden bears opened a 16-11 lead and extended it to as many as nine a 34-25 with 3:13 to play and would carry a 38-30 lead into the intermission.

the second half, the dragons came out strong and cut the lead to 38-37 with 17:21 to play. There would be five ties and three lead changes before the bears would take the lead at 57-55 and extend it to eight (63-55) on a pair of baskets by heiman, a couple free throws by james metcalf (sr., killeen, tx) and a layup by matt cadwell (jr., st. Paul, mn - right).

the dragons would again tie the game at 64-64 with 1:38 to play before heiman would hit the shot to put the golden bears up for good with 50 seconds to play.

heiman led the golden bears with 24 points on 10-16 shooting from the field, including 2-6 from three point range and 2-2 from the free throw line. Chany finished in double-figures with 13 points and cadwell 11.

for the game, the golden bears shot 25-55 (.455) from the field, and only 3-14 (.214) from beyond the arc. They were 14-22 (.636) from the free throw line.

the dragons were led by lee isaacson with 18 points and six rebounds, while justyn burgess finished with 17 points and four rebounds.

the golden bears were outrebounded msum 35-30. Concordia forced 16 dragon turnovers and converted that into 12 fast break points, compared to only three for the dragons.

concordia will return to action on monday, dec. 3, when north central university comes to the gangelhoff center for a 7:00 tip-off.
