Concordia University (23-10-1, 9-5 NSIC) improved to 9-1-1 over their past 11 games as they swept Bemidji state (5-29, 1-13 NSIC) 11-6 and 8-6 to complete the four game series sweep on the road on Sunday afternoon. Concordia has now won eight consecutive NSIC games.
The Bears jumped on the Beavers in game one with a five run second inning that was sparked by a two-run double by center fielder
Alex Kubal.
They added four more in the third as designated hitter
Chris Duda smoked a three-run shot over the right field fence, giving the Bears a decisive 9-0 lead after two and a half.
The Beavers added a pair in the bottom of the inning and put up four more compared to just one for Concordia in the fourth to cut the score to 10-6, knocking starter
Jacob Campion from the contest.
Freshman reliever
Kirk Ingram came in for the Bears and closed the door as he was flawless out of the pen. Ingram worked 3.1 innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out four to pick up his fourth win.
Kubal ended up 3-4 with two runs and two rbi while Duda was 2-5 with a run and four rbi. Duda's home was his ninth of the year, leading the bears on the season. Four other bears turned in multi-hit performances.
In game two, Concordia jumped out early once again with a three run first inning sparked by an rbi double by
Bobby Meier and an rbi single by
Erik Quarberg.
After allowing a BSU run in the bottom of the inning, Concordia's bats went back to work as Duda picked up two more rbi when he singled in two runs through the right side, giving Concordia a 5-1 lead.
The fireworks came in the fourth inning, as Concordia belted a pair of home runs, first a solo shot by
Tony Boxwell followed by a two-run blast by Kubal. It was Boxwell's third of the year and Kubal's fourth and the homers gave the Bears an 8-1 lead.
however, the beavers responded with a three-spot of their own in the bottom half and added two more in the fourth to chase starter
rob maslowski out of the game.
But the Golden Bears turned to their relief specialist as Ingram made his team-leading 15th appearance and finished off the beavers as neither team would score the rest of the way.
For his efforts, Ingram earned his second win of the day to improve to 5-1. He worked 3.2 innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits with one strikeout and zero walks.
Senior first baseman
Erik Quarberg, who set the Concordia school record for career home runs last weekend against Northern State, achieved another milestone as he broke the CU career rbi record with his nine rbi performance in Saturday's sweep over the Beavers. Quarberg now has 136 career rbi in 113 games played.
The Bears do not have a weekday series this week and return to the diamond next weekend on April 29-30 as they remain on the road to take on Southwest Minnesota State at 1:30 and noon, respectively.
