Bears record back-to-back shutout victories to sweep nsic crossover

Concordia university (33-11, 10-2 nsic) extended their winning streak to 10 games as they blanked bemidji state 3-0 and minnesota-crookston 19-0 (5 inn.) on day two of the nsic crossover in bemidji, minn.

the pitching was brilliant for concordia, as senior kristen schmidt mastered the beavers in the first game, striking out 15 batters in seven innings of two-hit ball. Schmidt didn't walk anyone as she improved to 17-8. After striking out the side on 12 pitches (nine for strikes) in the first inning, schmidt posted two strikeouts in every inning the rest of the way, including a string where she retired 16 consecutive hitters.

junior mandy turba followed that with an equally impressive line, as she needed just one more out to complete a no-hitter. Turba struck out eight batters and walked just one while issuing just one hit with two outs in the fifth and final inning. With the win, turba improves to 16-3.

the bears broke a scoreless first game tie in the fourth inning when freshman natalie mast smoked a leadoff double into the left center field gap. Mast came in to score a few batters later when schmidt laced an rbi single. Schmidt, who advanced to second on the throw home, scored when senior nikki smith drilled an rbi double to left center, giving the bears a 2-0 edge after four.

they added an insurance run in the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead as schmidt cruised the rest of the way for the win.

concordia wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard in the second game as they put up a four run first inning highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore mallory olson.

cu followed that with a five run second that featured a three-run home run by sophomore laura tischler, her third homer of the year, to give concordia a 9-0 lead after two.

the bears continued the offensive outburst while the defensive and pitching stifled the golden eagles in the rout. As a team, the bears hit three home runs (olson, yurek, l.tischler), a triple (dufresne) and three doubles (yurek, schmidt, olson) as they racked up 21 hits.

every starter had at least one hit and one run in the game and there were six multi-hit performances, led by schmidt who was 4-4 with four runs and an rbi and olson who was also 4-4 but had six rbi and three runs along with her double and home run. Junior amanda yurek also provided fireworks as she matched olson with a double and a home run in going 3-3 with two runs and five rbi.

olson and yurek's home runs put them in a three-way tie for the team lead with senior kristin linell, who all have hit six long balls on the season. Yurek also has smacked 17 doubles.

concordia returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel across town to take on the top-ranked ncaa diii team in the nation, the university of st. Thomas at 4 p.m.
