Bears draw second consecutive split with Peacocks

Concordia University (11-4) drew a split with Upper Iowa (12-12) for the second-straight day as the Peacocks took game one, 10-1 before the Golden Bears earned the victory in the second game, 7-5 on Sunday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.

In the first game, the Peacocks, a future Northern Sun member, scored three runs in the third and that would be enough to secure the win, but added seven more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to provide all of their scoring.

Concordia's lone run came in the top of the sixth as second baseman Galen Wetzell led off with a single and advanced to third on a single to right center field by outfielder Chris Duda. Wetzell scored when first baseman Erik Quarberg grounded into a double-play.

Junior Jacob Campion started for Concordia and worked three innings, allowing three runs but just one earned run. He surrendered just two hits and a walk in the outing as he picked up the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.

Senior Nick Davis and freshman Ted Farni finished the game for Concordia on a scoreless note. Davis pitched 0.2 innings before giving way to Farni who worked the final inning.

The bats came alive in the second game as the two leadoff hitters, Duda and Wetzell, reached base safely with a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively. Duda would come in to score on Quarberg's (left) rbi double to center field and Wetzell crossed the plate on junior right fielder Greg Winegarden's sacrifice fly to right. Quarberg scored the third run of the inning for the Bears when third baseman Mason Reinhart smacked an rbi single through the left side.

The Peacocks got a run back in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second to pull within a run, 3-2 after two innings.

But the Bears added another pair of runs in the third as they tallied three hits. The Peacocks matched Concordia's two run third inning in the bottom half with a pair of their own, making it a 5-4 contest.

But the Bears rallied with a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth to pull ahead by three, 7-4 heading into the final frame.

Upper Iowa rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a pair to come within a run, but the game ended when the Peacocks were called out for batting out of order with runners on first and second and two outs.

Reinhart (right) finished 3-4 with a pair of rbi and his third double and Quarberg was 2-3 with two runs, two rbi and a pair of doubles, giving him ten on the season.

Sophomore Eric Utoft (left) earned the victory as he threw a complete game, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out four to improve to 2-1 on the year.

The Golden Bears return to action on April 1-2 when they play host to Winona state for a pair of doubleheaders to kick off their NSIC schedule.
