Bears hang with hawkeyes for a half, run out of gas in exhibition loss

The concordia women's basketball team competed for the first time in 2006-07 on the road against the university of iowa in front of 2,290 hawkeye fans on monday evening. The bears and hawkeyes were knotted at 33 early in the second half until iowa used a 10-0 run spanning 4:12 en route to a 70-50 victory over cu at carver hawkeye arena in iowa city, iowa.

the bears led for the early part of the first half, expanding the lead to as much as five points, 16-11 with 10:28 to play until the break. But iowa rallied for the next points and the bears never led again, just tying the game once at 33 early in the second half.

concordia was led by junior forward amanda behnke, who scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in 27 minutes. Junior kelly lund, a transfer from northern iowa, scored 10 points and had two rebounds, two assists and a block in her third career game against the hawkeyes, second in carver hawkeye arena.

the bears led the hawkeyes on the glass in the first half, outrebounding them 26-18 including a decisive 12-2 edge on the offensive end. The hawkeyes reversed that trend in the second half, however as they would end up beating the bears on the glass 49-45 for the game. The rebounding effort was led by sophomore forward candace olstad with 12, five offensive. C.olstad also poured in seven points in a team-high 31 minutes.

three golden bears scored 19 total points off the bench led by freshman guard jamie jones who put in seven with three assists, two rebounds and a steal. Fellow freshman guard kali olstad and junior guard lindsey palmer each drained a pair of three's and scored six points. K.olstad had four rebounds while palmer had three and an assist.

in their first time out, the bears shot just 25.8 percent (17-66) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-24) from three-point range and 50.0 percent (9-18) from the line. The defense was there, holding the hawkeyes to 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, 20.0 percent (3-15) from three-point territory but the hawkeyes buried the bears at the foul line, converting 73.0 percent (27-37) and outscoring them by 18 at the stripe alone.

concordia has one more tune-up on their exhibition schedule until the regular season starts with non-conference action. The bears will play host to north tartan elite next sunday, november 12 at 2:00 at the gangelhoff center before opening the season at augustana on tuesday, nov. 15 at 6:00 in sioux falls, s.d.
