The concordia women's soccer team concluded their 2006 season in the third-place game of the nsic championships in winona with a 1-0 win over wayne state on a goal by
rachel vitense in the 108th minute of the game. Vitense scored on a steal in front of the wildcat goal in the two minutes left in the second overtime and put the ball in the lower right corner of the net. With the win, the bears record their school-record 11th win on the season to finish third in the nsic.
in regulation, neither team had a good chance to score during the first 85 minutes as most of the game was played between the 20-yard lines. Wayne state had two solid chances to score in the last five minutes of regulation as gena romano hit the goalpost with 4:36 and jenna pendley had a point-blank shot stopped by
hannah turgerson (right) with 2:06 left.
the bears had a chance to win the game with 3:15 remaining in the first overtime when
hillary johnson had a five yard shot blocked by the defense in front of the net off a vitense free kick. Wayne state missed a chance to end the game as the clock expired in the first overtime when turgerson made a diving save of a melissa benson shot.
for the game, the bears were outshot 20-12 with 11 shots on goal for wayne state and seven for concordia.
keyton wheelock played 45 minutes of scoreless soccer in the first half, stopping two shots. Turgerson came in and played the last 63 minutes and stopped 11 wildcat shots. The two combined for the seventh shutout of the years for the bears.
concordia's three seniors finished their careers saturday. Rachel vitense finished as the school's all-time leading scorer with 29 goals, 25 assists and 83 points in 76 games. She holds the school-record with ten goals in a season in 2003 and 2004.
rachel flaherty (left) scored 18 points on six goals and six assists in 69 games.
emily grannes (right) played in 41 games in two seasons and scored one goal. She led the bears defense that allowed only seven goals in ten nsic games and was named all-nsic in 2006.
