Paitich wins seventh straight as Bears sweep Mustangs

Concordia-St. Paul (34-13, 12-2 NSIC) defeated Southwest Minnesota State (17-21, 6-8 NSIC) 2-0 and 8-2 Wednesday afternoon in Marshall, Minn. Senior Allison Paitich won her seventh consecutive decision in game two after junior Kristen Schmidt stifled the Mustang bats with a complete-game shutout in the first game.

Concordia broke a scoreless tie when junior Nikki Smith led off the top of the fifth with a base hit. Vanessa Dufresne came off the bench to pinch run for Smith and was advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a pair of walks to load the bases. Dufresne came around to score on a passed ball, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Smith continued to do the damage the following inning when she drilled an RBI triple to center field, scoring Amanda Yurek, who led off the inning with a single.

That was all Schimdt needed to finish off the Mustangs. She hurled seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 10 to improve her record to 19-6.

In game two, the Concordia offense got things going in the first inning, scoring five runs behind Smith's two out three-run homerun. Yurek also had a RBI single earlier in the inning.

In the third inning, the Bears added two more, as Yurek and Schmidt each had RBI doubles to give Concordia a 7-1 lead.

The eighth run came across in the fourth inning as Dufresne pinch hit for Shannon Miller and drove in a run on a single to Cetner, scoring Tracie Enzler.

That gave Paitich plenty of run support as her record improved to 11-7 on the season. She pitched five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with just one walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Mandy Turba finished off the Mustangs, throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Turba only let one batter reach base, allowing one hit and no walks.

Concordia returns to action April 30 when they compete at the MSU, Mankato Invite in North Mankato, Minn.
