Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Concordia wins first-ever NSIC Tournament championship; Pozzani named MVP

Senior guard Jennifer Pozzani scored a game-high 24 points to lead second-seeded Concordia-St. Paul (23-7) over the top seed, host MSU, Moorhead (24-6) 86-78 to capture the NSIC Red Baron Women's Basketball Classic championship in front of 729 fans at Alex Nemzek Hall on Sunday afternoon.

Pozzani, Concordia's all-time scoring leader, was 9-12 from the field and collected six rebounds, had two assists, three steals, and a block in an all-around effort to earn the tournament's Most Valuable Player Award.

But Pozzani didn't do it all on her own, as five of her teammates scored in double-figures, led by junior guard Nakia Carlisle who had 14 points and a team-high four assists despite being limited by foul trouble for much of the second half. Carlisle, who scored 20 points in the semifinals, joins Pozzani on the All-Tournament Team.

Junior guard Ashley Smith came off the bench to lead the rebounding effort for Concordia, collecting seven boards in 23 minutes. Smith also scored 10 points despite struggling with her shot, shooting 1-11 from the field, but she was clutch from the stipe, connecting on 7-10.

The Bears controlled the game throughout, holding a 46-36 halftime lead and pushing lead up to at least 14 points in the second half. The Dragons would not go away, cutting the lead to three late, but the high-powered offense for Concordia was too much for MSUM.

Allison Swenson of MSU Moorhead joins Pozzani and Carlisle on the All-Tournament Team. Swenson notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds with four steals in 24 minutes off the bench.

The All-Tournament Team is rounded out by Kristen Humphries of Wayne State and Miranda Boepple of Northern State.

Concordia, ranked no. 4 in the latest North Central Regional poll, will await a bid to the NCAA North Central Regional Tournament - which will be announced at 9 p.m. Sunday night. MSU Moorhead held the no. 2 spot in the poll last week and will also be awaiting an invite.
