Bears split in last day in California

The Bears return home from their 2005 spring trip in California with a 9-10 overall record as they split a double-header with Concordia-Irvine, 5-2 and 1-3.

Neither team was able to get any offense rolling early on in the first game, as pitchers Natalie Brown and Kristen Schmidt combined to allow just two base runners without any hits in the first three innings. Then, in the top of the fourth, the Golden Bears got on the board. Nikki Smith hit a two-out double down the left-field line, scoring Vanessa Dufrense to put CSP ahead, 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Concordia-Irvine broke through and blew the game open with four runs. The Eagles had six straight batters reach base with RBI singles from Audra Ratajczak and Krista Zielke and a two-RBI hit from Nicole Ellis.

In the top of the sixth, Schmidt made it 4-2 with a solo home run, but Concordia-Irvine answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer from Ellis, her third of the season.

In the second game, it was all Allison Paitich for the Golden Bears, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out three to pick up the victory. Concordia-St. Paul got on the board in the top of the first with a two-run home run from Amanda Yurek.

The Bears will not return to action until March 29, when they will host their first games at home when St. Cloud State visits.
