Gophers defeat Bears 2-0

The Bears opened the 2005 season with a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota Gophers at the Metrodome. Minnesota pitcher Lyn Peyer held Concordia to one hit in seven innings and struck out 13 CSP batters.

Concordia junior Kristen Schmidt gave up two runs on four hits and struck out seven Minnesota batters in six innings. Tracie Enzler had the Bears' only hit in the game in the third inning with a single with no outs.

The Gophers scored off a Melissa Murnane home run in the second inning and got an insurance run in the sixth inning, when Megan Higginbotham had a single to center to score Lindsey Erickson.

Concordia had their best scoring chance in the sixth inning, when Mallory Olson walked with two outs and Kristen Schmidt was hit by a pitch. Shannon Miller replaced Olson on second, and Miller and Schmidt advanced to third and second on a wild pitch by Peyer. Nikki Smith popped out to the pitcher to end the Concordia threat.

The Bears will return to action at the St. Cloud State Tournament on Feb. 18-20.
