The Concordia men's team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 57-42 win against host CSU-Pueblo in the second game of the Chuck Stephens Classic.
Ty Thomas led the Bears with 18 points, while
Kenneth Pointer added 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the win. Thomas and Pointer were both named to the All-Tournament Team, and Pointer was named the tournament MVP.
For the second straight game, the Bears scored first and never trailed. Despite scoring only 20 points on 8-22 (.364) shooting in the first half, the Bears still led by five by giving up a season-low 15 points on 6-25 (.240) shooting by CSU-Pueblo.
The Bears maintained a healthy five-to-ten-point lead for most of the second half, but they pulled away in the final minutes by making 11 of their last 12 free throws in the last 1:08, including 7-8 by
Kyle Marxhausen and 4-4 for
Kenneth Pointer.
Marxhausen finished the game with ten points and a six rebounds. The Bears finished the game making 15-40 (.375) from the field but only 2-11 (.187) from three-point range. They also made a season-best 25-31 (.806) from the free-throw line. They had only two assists in the game.
CSU-Pueblo was held to 14-54 (.254) shooting on the night, and they made only 1-10 (.100) from behind the arc and 13-25 (.520) from the free throw line. They were led by Steve Raquet, who had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the game.
Concordia outrebounded the Thunderwolves 37-31.
The Bears will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6th when they travel to MSU, Mankato to face the Mavericks at 7:00.
