Bears cruise past Beavers, advance to NSIC Touranament semifinals

Junior Kelsey Kyro's perfect second game helped lead the Golden Bears past Bemidji State in three games, 30-12, 30-12, 30-23, in the first round of the 2005 NSIC Volleyball Tournament on Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center. The win for third-ranked Concordia improves their record to 26-4 and extends their winning streak to 13 matches, and they are 20-1 in their past 21 contests. The Beavers' season ends with a 3-31 overall mark.

Kyro hit all six of her attacks for kills in the second game and finished with 11 kills and a .364 pct. on the match. Freshman Maria Steinhagen was nearly perfect in the second game with Kyro, as she hit six of her seven attempts for kills with one error. Steinhagen ended up with 11 kills and a .350 pct.

Senior setter Cailin Terhaar averaged 17 assists per game in the match as she finished with 51 along with six digs and four blocks (three solo). She led a Golden Bear attack that hit .362 for the match, including .633 in the second game (21 kills, 2 errors, 20 attacks).

Junior Jessica Lucia led the team with 17 kills, a .438 hitting pct., and finished with a double-double, as she added 11 digs. Lucia had just three errors in 32 total attacks in the match. She also added four assists.

Junior Ashley Olson just missed a double-double, as she posted nine kills while leading the team with 15 digs.

The Bears held the Beavers to a .000 team hitting pct. For the match, including a -.147 in the opening game. The Bears did not allow BSU to reach 10 kills in a game, holding them to five, five, and eight for the three-game match.

Concordia advances to the NSIC Tournament semifinals tomorrow night, when they will take on #5 seeded Northern State, who upset the #4 seed Wayne State in a convincing 3-1 defeat. The Bears and Wolves take the court following the SW Minnesota State/MSU Moorhead match at 5 p.m., expected to be a 7:30 start.
