The Golden Bears dropped their first game of the season with a 3-0 loss to South Dakota Sunday afternoon at Gangelhoff Field. The loss evens the Bears' record at 1-1, while the Coyotes improve to 1-1 with the victory.
The Coyotes broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute of play with a Tina Brummer goal. The Bears' lone shot in the half was by
Angie Rockney (Eagan, Minn.), but it was scooped up by USD's keeper Keyton Wheelock. South Dakota added their second goal in the 45th minute when Brandy Fields beat
Kara Gamboni (Mahtomedi, Minn.) to put USD up 2-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Bears were unable to capitalize on two scoring opportunities, as Wheelock was solid in the net for USD.
Maria Radmacher (Champlin, Minn.) could not convert on a rebound opportunity in front of the net, which would have brought the Bears within one. Just a few minutes later,
Rachel Vitense (Cottage Grove, Wis.) drilled a shot just wide to the right of the net.
USD was able to shut down the aggressive play of the Bears in the second half, and they added their third goal in the 86th minute.
USD outshot Concordia 26-5 and had a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Gamboni had a busy afternoon in the net, as she recorded nine saves in the loss.
The bears return to action Sept. 3 and 4 when they travel to Jamestown, N.D. to take on Univ. of Mary-Bismark and Jamestown College in non-conference play.
