The Concordia softball team split a pair of road games with Upper Iowa University on Wednesday night in Fayette, Iowa. The Bears won the first game 10-0 in five innings and were defeated 5-3 in the second game.
Kristen Schmidt was two outs from a perfect game when Upper Iowa's Nesteby hit a single up the middle with one out. It would be the only baserunner for the Peacocks as Schmidt struck out nine and allowed no walks.
Offensively, the Bears tallied 10 runs on 13 hits, including Kristin Linell's team-leading 6th homerun, a grand slam in the fourth inning. Schmidt also went 3-4 with a double and a RBI, and Alicia Nortrom went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs.
In the second game, the Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on runs by Nortrom and Vanessa Dufresne. But Upper Iowa retook the lead on runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Concordia had seven hits in the game, including a double by Shannon Miller.
The Bears return to action on Friday against South Dakota State at the University of Minnesota.
