No. 1 seed Minnesota Duluth (26-4) defeated host no. 2 seed Concordia-St. Paul (32-3) in four games, 30-18, 30-25, 27-30, 30-17 in the NCAA North Central Regional Championship match played at the Gangelhoff Center on Saturday evening.
Callie Zwettler hit .345 to lead the Bulldogs with 23 kills and 15 digs. UMD hit .282 behind setter
Greta Iisakka and her 57 assists.
Vicky Braegelmann and
Alecia Meger added 11 and ten kills, respectively to round out the UMD offensive attack. Libero
Allison Boddy had 25 digs to anchor a UMD defense which was able to stifle the Golden Bears to a .117 hitting percentage.
The Bulldogs also dominated at the net, outblocking the Golden Bears 13 to 8. CSP was ranked 3rd in the NCAA with 3.37 blocks per game throughout the season.
Rachel Langseth spearheaded the blocking effort with two solo blocks, eight total while Meger added three solos and five total blocks.
Joy Wubben led the Golden Bears with 15 kills, while the CSP defense was scrambling to dig up UMD's 174 attacks. Five players had at least ten digs for Concordia-St. Paul, led by setter
Cailin Terhaar with 13. Terhaar also added 38 assists.
Zwettler, Braegelmann, Iisakka and Boddy of Minnesota Duluth were all selected to the All-Tournament Team and were joined by Terhaar, Wubben and
Jessica Lucia of Concordia-St. Paul. The team was rounded out by
Amy Mcleay and
Christie Johnson of Nebraska-Omaha,
Lindsey Soukup of South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota State's
Erin Contons, and
Sigourney Schaeffer of Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
Minnesota Duluth will advance to the NCAA Elite Eight Tournament where they will take on the winner of the Great Lakes Regional Championship match. The Elite EIght will be played on Dec. 2-4 at a site to be announced.
