Mustangs score game winner with 14 seconds left to foil Bears' comeback

The Golden Bears were within inches of moving into a chance at first place in the Northern Sun standings, as senior Angie Rockney's shot at the buzzer deflected off the crossbar and straight down to the ground just shy of the goal line. Had the ball deflected into the net, Concordia (9-9, 3-2 NSIC) would have forced overtime against conference-leading SW Minnesota State (8-7-1, 5-0 NSIC), but fell short 3-2.

The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on this wet and windy day at Concordia Field. Liz Schiesl scored in the 7th minute, drilling a shot off the CU defense just beyond the reach of junior goalkeeper Kara Gamboni. SMSU extended their lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute off of Michelle Wells' first of two goals on the afternoon. The Mustangs cruised into halftime with a 2-0 lead and appeared poised to improve their hold atop the NSIC standings.

But midway through the second half, the Bears regained their composure and their fire and in the 73rd minute, Rockney put the bears on the board and cut the lead to 2-1.

During the following 15 minutes, both teams had great scoring opportunities, but it was Rockney who capitalized in the 88th minute with just 2:09 left to play, drilling a breakaway shot past SMSU keeper Michelle Gilbert.

The goal was Rockney's second in the game and gives her seven on the season. Junior Lindsay Hartleben assisted on both goals, with Gamboni also assisting on the second.

It appeared as if the game would be heading to overtime until Wells scored her second goal of the game with just 14 seconds remaining.

The bears made one last attack, and Rockney was inches from a hat trick that would have sent the game into overtime.
