Vitense scores two more as Bears jump out to 2-0 in NSIC play

Sophomore Rachel Vitense willed the Golden Bears (8-7, 2-0 NSIC) to victory Saturday afternoon, scoring both CSP goals in a 2-1 win over Minnesota Crookston (2-10, 0-2 NSIC). The Bears open conference play with a pair of victories and are now on a season-high three-game winning streak.

Junior goalkeeper Kara Gamboni also saw her shutout streak come to a close when UMC's Brittany Effird scored on a breakaway in the 76th minute, cutting the score to 2-1 with under 15 minutes to play. Gamboni had not been scored on in over 258 minutes (258:26), a span that included two shutout victories.

Vitense broke a scoreless tie in the ninth minute on a pass from senior Angie Rockney. She extended the Concordia lead to 2-0 in the 65th minute, taking a pass from senior Maria Radmacher. The two goals for Vitense now give her nine on the season, one shy of tying the school record that she currently shares with Erin Johnson. Johnson had ten goals in 2001 before Vitense tied the record last season as a freshman.

The assist for Rockney now gives her six on the season, and she is second to Vitense (21) in points with 14. Radmacher's assist now gives her a total of five on the season.

The Bears head on the road next weekend to take on conference foes Northern State and MSU Moorhead on October 16 and 17.
