In his first start as a Golden Bear, Hayes delivered a 1-hitter in 6.0 shutout innings while striking out four to earn the win over St. John’s last Monday at the Metrodome in game two of a doubleheader. The only hit he allowed was an infield chopper to third base in a 9-pitch at bat to leadoff the second inning. He scattered three walks, but no one reached second base against him and he only used 82 pitches, throwing 51 for strikes.

He was also selected as the NSIC Pitcher of the Week for his performance.
