ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul track and field teams are gearing up for one of the most exciting weekends of the year as they prepare to play host in the Holst Invitational at Sea Foam Stadium this Saturday.
MEET INFORMATION
The Golden Bears will once again host their annual meet honoring former Concordia University president Robert Holst on Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. while running events will kick off at 12 p.m.
The forecast couldn't look much better for Saturday with a current forecast of mid-60's temperature with lots of sun and a slight breeze from the north.
Concessions, including hot dogs and hamburgers along with other food and drink options, will be available underneath the main bleachers throughout the day.
LAST TIME OUT
Concordia took advantage of the trip south across the border into Iowa as both the men's and the women's teams collected school records over the weekend at the Jim Duncan Invitational.
The quartet of
Erica Young,
Wakpor Ighovojah,
Leah Amundson and
Kalle Burney teamed up to shave over two seconds off of the CSP record set two years ago in the 4x400 meter relay. The group registered in with a time of 3:56.89, edging the previous record of 3:58.97, en route to finishing third.
Kalle Burney and
Erica Young put up big efforts elsewhere as well by combining for six of the team's 12 top-5 finishes in the meet. Burney wrapped up second in the 400 meter run, third in the 110 meter hurdles and third in the high jump while Young took home third in the javelin throw and fourth in the long jump.
Benjamin Allen gave the men a record-setting performance in the 1500 meter run as he also improved on the previous best by more than two seconds. Allen's time of 3:53.66 surpassed Kyle Warren's record 3:55.95 set back in 2007. Allen also added an impressive third place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.11.
LAST YEAR AT THE HOLST
Last season, the Golden Bears cruised to 18 finishes inside the top-10 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Holst Invitational at Sea Foam Stadium.
It was a record-setting day at the meet as 35 teams and over 1,000 athletes competed in the largest Holst Invitational to date.
The Golden Bears saw nine top-10 results on both the men's and women's sides as the men put up six finishes inside the top-5 while the women picked up three.
Tyler Naumowicz had a hand in three of the top-5 finishes as he took home second in the 400m hurdles, fifth in the 100m hurdlers and helped the 4x400m relay team to a second place finish. Naumowicz wrapped up the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.65 seconds, the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.49 second and he joined up with
David Stanley,
Mohamed Malim and
Vantwon Melton for a time of 3:18.35 in the 4x400m relay.
Erika Shady had an impressive day on the women's side as she collected one of the two top-5 individual performances as she finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.41 seconds. She also helped the 4x100m relay team, along with
Gloria Williams,
Erica Young and
Wakpor Ighovojah, to the team's lone win on the day with a time of 49.34 seconds.
