Women in second, men in seventh after day one of NSIC Championships

Women with best point total since 2006 with a day of competition left

MANKATO, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul track and field teams wrapped up the first day of the NSIC Indoor Championships with the women sitting in second place and the men sitting in a tie for seventh.

The women continued their impressive display as they followed up their league-leading 17 points in the NSIC Multi-Event Championships with 18.66 points in the first day of the weekend. Incredibly, the women's squad has more than tripled their total from last season already with a day of competition left. The total of 35.66 is also the program's most since collecting 49 back in 2006.

All of the damage was done for the women in the field events as the team tallied 12.66 points in the pole vault and six points in the high jump.

Marianna Kramer and Gretchen Feilen came through in a big way in the pole vault as they both finished as a part of a three-way tie in the event, finishing behind only Courtney Crandall from Sioux Falls. Both collected All-NSIC honors in the pole vault with heights of 11'11.75" with Kramer blowing past her previous career best my four inches.

That was not all that Feilen had to offer on the day as she also picked up a point in the high jump with an eighth place finish with a height of 5'3.00".

Kalle Burney, who collected six points with a third place finish in the pentathlon two weeks ago, increased her point total to double digits as she put up five more in the high jump. Burney cleared 5'5.00" to come within an inch and a half of a PR in the event. She also took 12th in the 60m hurdles prelims as well.

Erica Young also put herself in position to score points as she finished the preliminary round in third place with a time of 1:37.47, breaking her own school record set earlier this season. A repeat performance in the finals tomorrow would earn her an All-NSIC place in the event.

The men added 11 more points to Tyler Naumowicz's one in the heptathlon to move into a tie for seventh heading into Saturday. The team collected points in three different places and put themselves in position for points in another.

The top finish came from the distance medley relay team as Benjamin Allen, Tyler Naumowicz, Cory Warner and Caleb Troe took home third place and six points in the event. The group finished within two seconds of breaking the school record with a time of 10:28.67.

Antony Odera added three more points in the long jump as he took sixth with a distance of 23'2.00".

In addition, making just his second competitive jumps of the year, Josh Johanson grabbed a pair of points while finishing seventh in the high jump with a PR and a height of 6'8.00".

Benjamin Allen is also in position to contribute some points as he finished in fifth in the 800 meter prelims. He put up a time of 1:56.92 on the day.

Action will continue tomorrow with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events starting at 1 p.m.
