MANKATO, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul men's and women's track and field teams each collected four top-5 finishes this weekend while competing in the MSU Open & Multis on the campus of Minnesota State.
Despite being unable to finish off the pentathlon,
Kalle Burney broke the deadlock and claimed the Concordia high jump record for herself by clearing 5'6.50" and taking first in the event. Burney cleared the mark with room to spare as she surpassed last weekend's record-setting mark by 1.25 inches. Burney also finished fourth in the shot put and 800 meter run but was unable to complete the pentathlon as she missed the long jump and 60m hurdles.
Her fellow multi-athletes
Wakpor Ighovojah and
Erica Young also had productive days as they both hit NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the pentathlon. Ighovojah picked up 3446 points to finish second while Young took third with a season-best mark of 3287 points.
Also on the women's side,
Gloria Williams took fourth in the 60 meter dash while
Gretchen Feilen took fifth in the pole vault. Williams took sixth in the prelims and eighth in the semifinals before surging to a fourth place finish with a time of 7.84 seconds in the final. Feilen's fifth place finish in the pole vault came in the form of an 11'3.75" to grab final final top-5 finish for the women's team.
Josh Johanson highlighted the men's finishes as he took second in the 600 meter run by finishing with a time of 1:25.36 seconds. Johanson nearly took home the top spot as his time was just 0.09 seconds behind the winner.
Cory Warner (1000m) and
Antony Odera (high jump) were next in line with fourth place finishes in their respective events while
Tyler Karl took fifth in the 3000 meter run as well. Warner finished the 1000 meter run in 2:38.75 while Odera cleared 6'0.75" in the high jump. Karl wrapped up the 3000m in a time of 9:34.85.
The Golden Bears will be right back in Mankato next weekend as they are set to take part in the Ted Nelson Classic.
