Athletics by Josh Deer

Hanson and Hormann named 2016-17 Athletes of the Year

Hanson earns the nod for a second time while Hormann is the second straight sophomore baseball player to win the honor

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul department of athletics has selected its 2016-17 Male and Female Athletes of the Year with senior Riley Hanson (volleyball) and sophomore Isaac Hormann (baseball) earning the honors. The award is nominated and voted by athletic department head coaches and administrators.

This year's recipients provide consistency to the award, as Hanson becomes the second athlete to win the award twice in a career in the last 11 years, joining Maggie McNamara (volleyball, 2008-09 & 2009-10). She also brings the volleyball program the honor for the ninth time in the last 11 years.

Hormann becomes the second-straight sophomore to win the award from the baseball program, joining 2015-16 selection Connor Olson. Hormann is the sixth baseball player to earn the nod in the last 11 years.

Hormann is one just three student-athletes, joining Olson last year and Hanson in 2014-15, to achieve the honor following their sophomore year. Only one other recipient, McNamara in 2008-09, was an underclassmen. The other 19 honorees since 2006-07 including Hanson this year have been seniors.
