ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (4-9, 1-6 NSIC) dropped a close one to MSU Moorhead (9-3, 6-2 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center. The Bears were ahead for most of the fourth quarter, but the Dragons got hot at the end, going on a 13-6 run to close the game, propelling them to a 66-60 victory over the Bears.
The Golden Bears got off to a slow start, as their opponents went on an 11-3 run to finish the first quarter, to put MSU Moorhead up 17-10 after the first ten minutes. CSP bounced back in the second quarter, cutting the Dragon lead to only one at the half, as it was 26-25 in favor of MSU Moorhead heading into the break.
Concordia came out strong in the third quarter, gaining the lead with seven minutes left in the third frame and not giving it up for the rest of the quarter. At one point the Bears were up by seven, but the Dragons were able to cut that lead to three heading into the final ten minutes. CSP maintained their lead for a good portion of the fourth quarter, but the Dragons took over with 1:33 remaining, going on a 13-6 run to finish the game, going on to win by six.
The Bears presented a balanced scoring attack, with seven CSP players scoring and three ending in double figures.
Anna Schmitt led CSP with 15 points, while also finishing with five rebounds and three assists.
Brianna Miller was the next highest scorer for the Golden Bears, scoring 14 points, as she also hit two career-high marks with eight rebounds and four assists in the contest. This was the Lakeville native's second straight game in double figures as she shot an impressive 70.0% (7-10) from the floor.
Lindsay Dorr was the final CSP player in double digits, with 13 points. The junior center chipped in on the boards as well, compiling seven rebounds, three of which were offensive. Junior
Kayla Miller led the Bears on the boards, tallying a career-high ten rebounds. Miller also ended with eight points and a steal.
The Dragons outshot the Bears in every category, as they connected on 39.3% (22-56) of their shots from the field, 39.1% (9-23) from three, and 81.3% (13-16) from the line. The Bears shot only a little worse from the field, 37.7% (23-61), but were held to only 30.0% (6-20) from three and only connected on eight of 17 from the line (47.1%). MSU Moorhead's bench was also a little more active, scoring 26 points, compared to the Bears' bench, which only scored five.
MSU Moorhead's offense was also balanced, as three different players ended in double digits for them as well. Cassidy Thorson and Kiley Borowicz each had 15 points apiece, and Megan Hintz finished with 12. The Dragons held the rebounding advantage, 42-37, and had three players end with six rebounds and two players finish with seven.
Concordia continues their conference schedule on the road on Friday, January 5
th against Wayne State and then travels to Sioux Falls to take on #14 Augustana the following day. The Friday game will start at 6 p.m. and the Saturday contest is set to tip-off at 4 p.m.
