Bears down 36-35 at the half, but go on to lose 81-60

KANSAS CITY, MO. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (0-1) dropped their season-opener on Friday, losing 81-60 against the Pittsburg State Gorillas (1-0) in Kansas City. Junior guard Anna Schmitt scored her 1,000 point in the game, becoming the 28th Golden Bear to ever do so.

Schmitt ended the game with 25 points, picking up right where she left off from last season, when she led the NSIC in scoring with an average of over 18 points a game. Kyrah Fredenburg also matched her average of ten rebounds a game from last season as she ended Friday's game with ten rebounds and 13 points for her first double-double of the year. Lindsay Dorr added 12 points and eight rebounds in her first game back from last season's injury, and Ellie Gess opened up her collegiate career with nine points.

The Bears started strong in the first quarter, scoring the first nine points and not allowing Pittsburg State to score for the first eight minutes of the game. But after getting their first two points, the Gorillas went on an 8-6 run to finish the quarter, making the score 15-12 in favor of the Bears after the first ten minutes.

The second quarter went back and forth, with neither team being able to pull away. At one point the Gorillas lead the Bears by five, but a three-pointer from senior Kyrah Fredenburg and points from Schmitt tied it up. Pittsburg State made two free throws in the last minute of the quarter to lead 36-35 at the half.

Schmitt lead the Bears offense with 17 points in the first half, shooting 7-9 from the field and hitting two of three from behind the arc. Fredenburg added eight points and five boards in the first half, and Dorr and Gess each chipped in five points. Overall the team shot 42.9% from the field and 33.3% from the three-point line in the half.

As the third quarter began, it continued to be a tight game, with the scoring going back and forth. The Gorillas opened up the scoring and lead by two points three minutes in, but then Dorr hit two free throws to tie it up. After that the Gorillas started to pull away, going on a 14-4 scoring run. With a little over two minutes left in the quarter, Pittsburg State lead CSP by ten, but the Bears were able to cut down their lead to seven at the end of the third quarter, with the score being 58-51 in favor of the Gorillas.
